Tsampras Research Group
Structural Engineering Research, Education, and Outreach
Introduction
Tsampras Research Group is part of the Structural Engineering department at UC San Diego. We focus on research, educational, and outreach activities related to structural engineering. Our mission, goals, and core values are the following:
MISSION
Contribute to the improvement of safety and resilience of our built environment.
GOALS
Research
Develop low-damage high-performance earthquake-resilient building systems through integrated experimental and numerical research.
Education
Educate the next generation of diverse structural engineering students and enable them to conduct ethical and innovative research that advances the structural engineering profession.
Outreach
Disseminate the importance and the contribution of structural engineering in our society.
CORE VALUES
Scholarship and Excellence
Achieve the highest level of quality in education and research.
Focus on fundamental principles of structural engineering.
Actively contribute to the structural engineering profession.
Advance the knowledge in structural engineering and share our understanding in a concise and thorough manner.
Encourage curiosity with exploratory and creative mindset.
Promote collaborative research activities.
Integrity
Create an honest and fair learning and research environment.
Trust and respect our peers.
Be open to constructive feedback.
Produce unbiased research outcomes.
Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
Create a learning and research environment with equal opportunities for students and researchers independently of their age, gender, ethnicity, race, religion, disability, or sexual orientation.
Listen different perspectives and learn from others.

We are excited to share our continuing research on buildings with force-limiting connections. Our recent study assesses the effects of (1) the gravity load-resisting system modeling approach, (2) the seismic force-resisting system (SFRS) modeling approach, and (3) the uncertainty of the model parameters of the constitutive law of the longitudinal reinforcing steel of the SFRS on the seismic responses of a 12-story reinforced concrete wall building with force-limiting connections.
